Choosing the right music for your wedding is one of the most important decisions you’ll make other than the food. They both must be exceptional because they are the two things that your guests will be talking about when they leave. When deciding on whether to hire a band or a DJ here are some questions that you will want to ask yourself:
Budget: If you are on a strict budget, you might have no choice. A DJ is usually the most economical choice if you are looking for a 5 hour reception with dancing. A DJ can run from $900 to $1,500 where a band can range from $5,000 to $30,000 depending on how many pieces you want. Whatever you decide, choose a DJ or band that specializes in weddings because they will also be the emcee for the whole reception and this can make or break your entire reception.
Space: If you are limited on space, then a DJ will be your best bet. Professional DJ’s don’t need much room to set up. A band, depending on how many members, will need plenty of room to spread out their equipment and speakers. If you are having your wedding at a huge ballroom, a big band will do the best job of filling up the room with sound.
Guests: If your guests don’t like to dance, a band is a great option because they will entertain and engage with the crowd whether they are dancing or not. If you like a more high tech, disco feel, then a DJ is a master at mixing dance music and keeping the party going. A DJ will also have the newest songs available, while a band might not be able to play some of the newest top 40 hits that you love to dance to.
Keep in mind to choose someone who plays a variety of music. Music is for the enjoyment of all your guests and something from each era of music should be played to get everyone on the dance floor throughout the night. Playing one type of music all night, even if it is your favorite, will not make your guests happy.
